The Martial Eagle is the largest eagle in Africa. They have very keen eyesight allowing them to spot prey from about 5 kilometres away! So for him to spot this Rock Monitor was no problem at all. Even though the monitor is quite large, these eagles are in fact able to lift even heavier prey – up to about 8kg – but they generally take prey between 1-4kg. We were extremely lucky as he seemed very calm with us viewing him, although he did keep a tight grip on his lunch the entire time! Unfortunately we did not see him actually eating – it seems he was saving his meal for a quieter time.
