What is KwaMbili? This week I am writing about the magic of this place we call home away from home – KwaMbili Game Lodge, situated in the heart of the Greater Kruger and one of South Africas hidden gems, Thornybush Private Game Reserve.
KwaMbili means Place of Two which to me is broken down into two categories: firstly, the Lodge itself. Ever wanted to get the full bush experience with a rustic feel? Well this is the place, three tented rooms that make you feel part of the bush, with wild animals walking past your tent and being woken up by the incredible vocal sound of the lions. If this is a bit too much for you do not worry because we have three chalets as well – for those who prefer to enjoy the bush with air-conditioning and solid walls! Our camp is unfenced with a stunning hide where you can sit and relax while you wait for passing game. Nightlife there can be something truly amazing with visits from our local African Civets or porcupines. On hot sunny days go get a tan by our plunge pool or simple grab a book and sit in the open and have a read. Days all end with a master chefs three-course meal in the boma beside a warm cosy fire – here in the bush we call the fire the bush TV as we spend many hours just sitting back watching its flames. The crunch of KwaMbili is really the warm and friendly staff and the sense of belonging to what honestly is one of the most fantastic places on earth. Because we are small, no one feels left out and rangers and staff get to know the guests. The result is that the guests leave with a sense of wanting to return. I feel so privileged to be part of this team. For the fifth year in a row we have got the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and now we are in their Hall of Fame, so we are definitely doing something right!
Now to the second part of the meaning of KwaMbili to me: the game drives. Everyone has heard about the Big Five and they are unbelievable to see and we do get to see them often – but what many people are missing and what has become a lost art over the years is simply appreciating the sheer beauty of the African bush and what hidden miracles there are out there. The thing that fascinates me the most is how the ecosystem works and how every single creature and plant has its part to play in what is known as the nutrient cycle. The hidden art of the perfect game drive is not forgotten here with us and we want our guests to leave with a better understanding of the environment and go back home and share some of it with their friends and family. And of course Thornybush Private Game Reserve has a reputation for great photos. Our experienced rangers can get you up close and personal with many of the big animals – ever wanted to experience a entire breeding herd of elephants surrounding you in the vehicle? That happens here. Or feel the vibration of a lions roar – that too happens here. You will leave with some unforgettable moments.
