New Kid on the Block

Over the past few months we have started noticing that we have not seen our dominant male leopard Insako as frequently as we used to. In fact we at Kwambili haven’t seen him for over a month now. Instead we are seeing a new male leopard by the name of Malewane in Insako’s territory – a good-looking relaxed male that isn’t too bothered by vehicles coming close, simply carrying on doing what he was planning to do as if the vehicles weren’t even there. He’s the new boy on the block! And it’s good to have a new male such as Malewane as Insako was related to some of the females in the area and Malewane brings his own new bloodline into the area. We have recently heard that Insako is now the dominant male in a neighbouring reserve but we are not sure if Malewane chased Insako out of our area or Insako decided to move on himself. The only unfortunate consequence of the change is that if Malewane finds any female with cubs in his new territory there is a great possibility he will kill the cubs so that the female goes into oestrus, allowing him to mate and so start his own line
