Lions need to hunt to survive and the majority of their hunts target smaller prey such as Impala, Kudu and even buffalo. We were extremely lucky to find this male lion with a giraffe kill. Tackling an animal as large as a giraffe usually means a team effort from the whole pride yet this young male lion managed to take down a fully-grown male giraffe on his own! Unfortunately we were not there to see the actual hunt but, considering the difference in size between these two, you can just imagine the struggle he had. His effort was well rewarded – he fed off the carcass for three days! Even when a few hyenas managed to grab some meat there was still plenty left for the young male before he eventually moved off.
